What is the difference between granite, marble and quartz?
Granite is a highly durable natural stone. Marble is a softer, more porous natural stone and can scratch or stain more easily, so it is not always recommended for high-use areas. Quartz is an engineered surface made primarily from ground quartz combined with resins, polymers and pigments.
Does granite have imperfections?
Yes. Natural granite can contain pits and fissures. These variations are part of the character of the stone and differ from slab to slab.
Can I cut directly on granite countertops?
Granite can tolerate cutting, but it will dull knives quickly. Cutting directly on marble can also scratch the surface, so a cutting board is always recommended.
Can I place hot pots and pans on granite?
Granite withstands high temperatures, but we still recommend using a trivet to protect the surface and keep it looking its best.
What should I use to clean granite?
Use a cleaner labeled for natural stone or warm, soapy water with a soft sponge or cloth. Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners.
Do granite countertops need to be sealed?
We seal granite and marble after installation using a one-year sealer and recommend resealing as needed, typically annually. Quartz does not require sealing.
How thick are granite countertops?
Standard stone thickness is usually 3 centimeters, approximately 1¼ inches.
Will a sample match my actual slab?
Not exactly. Natural stone varies by block and quarry lot. We recommend viewing and approving the actual slabs at the supplier or our fabrication location.
Will there be a seam?
We avoid seams when practical. If dimensions or slab size require one, we plan its location to make it as unobtrusive as possible.
Should I approve the slabs before fabrication?
Yes, especially for natural stone with movement or strong variation. It gives you the clearest understanding of the final color and pattern.
Can I mix stone colors?
Absolutely. Many homeowners use one color on the kitchen perimeter and another on the island.
What is required for bartops and overhangs?
Corbels or other supports may be required. We identify the need during templating, and supports must be installed before countertop installation.
Can countertops chip, crack or stain?
They can, particularly after impact, movement or exposure to staining materials. Contact us to determine whether the area can be professionally repaired.
